Michael van Gerwen (MVG) has clearly been the dominant force in the Premier League since 2013 when he first won the title and then his four year reign from 2016 and last year when he missed out on the top four for the first time. MVG was also knocked off the world No 1 ranking after Gerwyn Price won the world title and lately the Dutchman has lost more than expected.
Gerwyn Price, the reigning World Champion was dramatically ruled out on Monday after testing positive for Covid-19. His replacement, James Wade, stepped in to face Gary Anderson but lost by the Scot´s 156 in the final leg.
The Belgian, Dimitri Van den Bergh drew on his only previous Premiere League appearance and pushed MVG all the way to the last leg where a 101 finish from the five-time PL champion closed the game in the Dutchman´s favor.
Van Gerwen, who missed the play-offs for the first time last year had to dig deep for a 12 dart break of throw and a point on opening night with his 101.
