First round of the Final-16 and we have the first major upset. Netherlands lost against Czech Republic in Budapest 2-0!
Was it deserving? Unfortunately yes. They were more composed and decisive than the Dutch but the game could have gone either way until Dutch defender Matthijs de Ligt was given the marching order after he handled the ball to prevent Schick from a free run at goal. As the freekick were given, VAR confirmed what the viewers knew at home, Red card for De Ligt and the start of the downfall of Netherlands.
Tomas Holes gave Czech Republic the lead in the 68th minute followed up by Patrik Schick 10 minutes from time. This was Tomas fourth goal in this championship and the Czechs will face off against Denmark giving them a real chance to reach the semi-finals as they did in 1996.
