Ireen Wüst – The greatest speed skater ever!
Winning the gold and setting a new Olympic Record in the 1500 meter event can only be described as legendary..once she decide to quit skating that is!
With this astonishing win, Wüst became the first person to win an individual gold medal in 5 different Olympics, stretching over 18 years! The first gold medal she won in Turin 2006 and now at the age of 35, she won her 6th gold in total as the oldest speed skating gold medallist ever. Wüst have won 12 medals in total in the Olympics which is more than any other Speed Skater and the third highest among all Winter Olympians.
“It is easiest to win the first time”, said Ireen Wüst. “Winning in my fifth Olympics is the toughest one” she continued.
The race was close and the winning time of 1.53,28, a new Olympic Record, was only 0,44 seconds faster than second place and silver medalist, Miho Tagaki from Japan. The Japanese “speed demon” have had a great season behind her and was considered as the favorite for this distance.
Ireen ´s fellow Dutch woman, Antoinette de Jong, finished in third bringing home the bronze for the Netherlands cementing the nation as the leading speed skatig nation of the world.
