Sandwich bag brought Alonso´s comeback in F1 to an end!
It was finally time for Fernando Alonso to make his much anticipated comeback in Formula 1 in the first race of the 2021 season. Fans all over the world was waiting to see how the Spaniard would perform in the Alpine car after 2 years absence from the top tier racing league, Formula 1. Well…..after an impressive start of the race, he drove the Alpine car back to the pits and retired on lap 32 of 56 and all because of a sandwich bag left behind by some marshal and his packed lunch or so it seems.
Before he retired the car Alonso showed the world that he could still drive a F1 car and the Alpine team seemed to have made the right choice bringing Alonso to the team. The Bahrain International Circuit is no doubt a fantastic track and the race itself was the most exciting race we have seen in years which is a good sign for the future to come. Alonso was performing well in his new car but after this first stop the team had to make some changes that reduced the performance of the car according to Alpine executive director Marcin Budkowski. But the race wasn’t over…or at least not until after the second stop.
After the second stop, a sandwich paper got stuck in the rear brake duct of Alonso´s car and the brake temperature increased rapidly which caused some damages to the brake system and the Alpine team retired the car due to safety reasons. Incredible unlucky for Alonso as this was his return to F1 and sad for all his fans and of course F1 fans in general.
Alonso had a great weekend up to the “sandwich-scandal” as he outperformed his team mate Esteban Ocon in qualification, starting from 8th position while Esteban started from 16th position (although affected by the Mazepin incident).
No more sandwiches in F1 we presume and Alonso back in the car for a full race in Italy 16th-18th of April.
